    What is Ductile Iron?

    Ductile Iron (Spheroidal Graphite Iron, formerly known as SG Iron), also called nodular cast iron, is a type of cast iron where the graphite is present in the form of spherical nodules rather than flakes. This microstructure gives ductile iron significantly higher tensile strength, ductility, and impact resistance compared to grey iron.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    What is the difference between ductile iron and grey iron?

    In ductile iron the graphite forms spheroidal nodules rather than the flakes found in grey iron. This gives substantially higher tensile strength, ductility and impact resistance, so ductile iron is chosen where a part must withstand shock loading or higher stress. Grey iron remains preferable where damping and machinability matter more.

    Is ductile iron the same as SG iron?

    Yes. Ductile iron, SG iron (spheroidal graphite iron) and nodular iron all refer to the same material. The names describe the nodular graphite structure that gives the metal its strength and ductility.

    What weight range of ductile iron castings can you supply?

    Ductile iron castings are produced from 0.5 kg to 650 kg per piece, using the same melting, moulding and finishing facilities as our grey iron production.

    Which applications is ductile iron suited to?

    Ductile iron is used where higher strength and toughness are required — automotive and heavy vehicle components, pump and valve bodies, construction and agricultural machinery parts, and general engineering components subject to stress or impact.

    How is the quality of ductile iron castings verified?

    Each batch is checked by spectrometer analysis, Rockwell hardness testing and tensile testing on a universal testing machine, with graphite nodularity assessed on an optical microscope with image analyser. The foundry operates an ISO 9001:2015 certified quality system.
